 What is the purpose of this study?

Originally the VEPTR (vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib) was created to help children breathe more easily. It has been used since to prevent scoliosis from getting worse. This study was created to understand if this treatment for scoliosis is safe and effective. The study is now at a point when we are looking at results since 2007, thus giving us a long-term perspective.


- Major scoliosis curves improved in 84% of study patients at 2 years of follow-up, 85% at 5 years of follow-up, and 82% at last overall follow-up.

- Spine growth was observed in 90% of study patients at 2 years follow-up, 100% at 5 years follow-up, and 96% at last overall follow-up.

Important Discussion Points

- In scoliosis management, growth often slows significantly during the years a patient has a device implanted. These results show that by using VEPTR on the ribs, growth can be maintained.

- This study only looked at VEPTR devices and is limited because we cannot compare to other treatment types or implants.

- This study is also limited by small population numbers of early onset scoliosis and switching of these patients to new technologies/treatments.
